Bathtub

Evolution Comes from the Latin verb evolvere and literally means "to unroll" or "completing". Figuratively it means, "development". The meaning has shifted to "progressive development", hereby is thought of expanding, growing or progressively getting into a higher level of organization.

In biology evolution is the gradual change of life on earth by natural selection. In my view appliances undergo the same gradual changes. In other words, appliances evolve as well. The only difference, with appliances it’s not about natural selection but about human selection.

You can see this evolution in many ways. A Table is a table, but tables are a few centimetres higher than before. This is because we humans are getting longer. Products therefore grow with us. Appliances change due to other use as well. A chair is to sit on, but for a referee during a tennis match sitting only is not enough. He must have a overview on the field. A stairway (or ladder) provides overview because you can climb it. The combination of these products is called a umpire chair. A bathtub was formerly a wooden tub, but due to science there are now many more materials available. By use of other materials the form of the bathtub changed as well.

During the project “Evolution” I try to show the gradual change of a chair into a bathtub. Because a bathtub is something you sit in or on it seems logical for me to make a bathtub from the thought of a sitting object. In the evolution (normally) already existing animals adapt to their new or changing living environment. I have chosen a chair as a starting point. This chair is the product that already exists and comes into a new living environment “the bathroom”. I have used the appearance of a chair and the requirements of a bathtub to make this evolution.
