Bathtub

Dit project is een vervolg van één van mijn afstudeerprojecten  aan de Design Academy Eindhoven, waarbinnen ik onderzoek heb gedaan naar het gebruik en de eigenschappen van vezelversterkte kunststoffen. Het frame is gelamineerd uit stroken Eiken van 3mm dikte, gebogen over een mal.
De Kuip is gemaakt van een Polyester, marmer composiet.

Om van de badkamer een ruimte in het huis te maken waar je graag wilt zijn benader ik de producten in de badkamer als objecten uit de woonkamer. Hiermee ben ik begonnen door het maken van een bad.

Als basis heb ik het houten frame van een stoel laten evolueren tot een badkuip, omdat de ergonomie van een stoel geheel gericht is op het menselijk lichaam.
Baden worden over het algemeen gemaakt van vezelversterkte kunststoffen. Dit zijn plastische materialen die door een chemisch proces uitharden. Als je het eindproduct ziet zie je dat echter niet terug. Baden zien er uit alsof ze altijd hard zijn geweest. Het roept geen enkele vraag op, het is er gewoon en je voelt er geen emotie bij. Ik heb een badkuip gemaakt waarbij het houten frame ook direct de mal van de kuip is. Het frame is de vorm die ik bepaald heb, deze zorgt voor het stramien waarbinnen de kuip zich mag vormen. Vervolgens heb ik het frame bespannen met glasvezelmatten en vol laten lopen met water. Het gewicht van het water zorgt voor spanning in het materiaal. Door het geheel in te smeren met een marmercomposiet hard het uit. Je ziet de druk van het water door de spanning in de badkuip en het frame is zichtbaar vanaf de binnenkant van de kuip, zoals je bot door huid heen kan zien.

The frame is laminated from strips of 3mm thick (American White) oak, bent over a mould.

To make the bathroom into a space in the house where you would like to be I approach the products in the bathroom as objects in the living room. I started this by making a bathtub.

I have evolved the wooden frame of a chair into a bathtub, because the ergonomics of a chair are completely focused on the human body.
Bathtubs are generally made of fibre reinforced plastics. These are plastic materials that harden through a chemical process. When you see the finished product you don’t see it was fluid once, it looks like they have always been hard. It raises no question, it's just there and you feel no emotion. I have made a bathtub in which the wooden frame is also the mould of the tub. The frame is the form I have made, it provides the pattern in which the tub is allowed to form itself. After that I covered the frame with fibreglass matting and filled it up with water. The weight of the water creates the tension in the material. By lubricating the fibreglass with a  marble composite it hardens out. You see and feel the pressure of the water because of the tension in the tub, and the wooden frame is visible from inside of the tub as your can see bones through skin.
