Concrete in a bag

Evolution Comes from the Latin verb evolvere and literally means "to unroll" or "completing". Figuratively it means, "development". The meaning has shifted to "progressive development", hereby is thought of expanding, growing or progressively getting into a higher level of organization.

In biology evolution is the gradual change of life on earth by natural selection. In my view appliances undergo the same gradual changes. In other words, appliances evolve as well. The only difference, with appliances it’s not about natural selection but about human selection.

“Concrete Kitchen” is a concrete cooking island casted in a textile mould, custom designed for a privately owned residence in the Dutch seaside town of ‘Egmond aan den Hoef’.

I look for the nature of materials and production-processes.
In this case : Concrete.

We are familiar with concrete in the world of construction as a course and geometrically
shaped material, but concrete is a fluid mass and can be casted into any given shape or form.

I changed my evolution in casting concrete by saying wood doesn’t exist. Due to this you have to make the mould of the casting from a different material. I have chosen to use textile. The pros and cons of textile are the flexibility of it. To get a good end result you need to get the textile under control.

The essential shape of the ‘Concrete Kitchen’ is, like in the industrial world, rectangular.
Since the mould was made out of textile, and by the influence of gravity, the concrete has had the chance to find its own way. By supporting the mould at some places I have determined the end limits of where the concrete could come. Due to this, the kitchen got a completely different feel to it.

The mould for the cooking island was made to measure for the designated space.
The dimensions of the cooking island are: depth 105 cm x width 290 cm x height 90 cm.
